PostSubject: Aselin Debison. One of my very favorites. From Novia Scotia.   Wed 16 Jul - 0:47

I should have done this thread months ago. When I first did research on child singers back in 2003 and 2004, before Youtube and all, I discovered Aselin Debison. I loved her voice on her debut album titled Sweet Is The Melody at age 12 released in 2002 and then even after she changed her style and grew up a little and made another album at 15(writing and co-writing songs), I loved her still. I think she has one of the prettiest voices of any child singer. Many of the songs on her first album have a celtic flavor due to her heritage and cultural upbringing. However, she also does a fantastic version of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's arrangement of the old classics Somewhere Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World. It was a big hit for her in Korea and Japan. I will have to try to find out what she is doing these days. She is now 18 and has not done any professional released in three years. Here is an introduction to Aselin. She has a Wikipedia page. Not that many child singers has one you know.

Here is a biography written on her when she was 14 years old.

Despite her young age, Aselin Debison is already a singer who is a part of history. Five years ago, at the age of 9, Debison galvanized a coal miners' protest in Cape Breton in her native Nova Scotia, singing the local anthem "The Island" with such touching simplicity that thousands of angry striking miners wept, joined hands and sang along. Word of the young singer's dramatic performance and of her haunting voice spread quickly, and she became a sensation in Nova Scotia and throughout Canada. From the cheering crowds at the 2000 Canada Day celebration in Ottawa to the release of a Christmas recording in 2001, Aselin Debison has emerged as perhaps the fastest-rising star in Canadian music. After signing an exclusive contract to record for Sony Music Canada, the young singer set her sights on attracting an international audience.

With pop luminaries Peter Asher and George Massenberg as producers, Debison's debut Sweet Is The Melody was released in September of 2002.

Aselin is the daughter of a landscaper and a hairdresser, both natives of Cape Breton and her first name was inspired by the character of Aslan, the lion on C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia. She has been singing and, as she says, "enjoying making people happy with my singing" since earliest childhood. Though she has had no formal vocal training, she sang frequently with her classmates when she was enrolled, at the age of two, in the Learning Leprechauns, a private preschool not far from her home in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. "I was just one of the girls picked for singing," she told an interviewer earlier this year, talking about her preschool. But it was not until a miner's wife called and asked her to sing at the protest rally that people began to hear what was special in Debison's voice.

"After the miners' rally, when I saw how emotional everyone got after I sang, I thought I might get somewhere with singing," she said in an early interview.

Since the release of her debut album, Aselin has taped an enormously successful CBC concert special, performed high profile shows for PBS in the U.S. and contributed the theme song "The Center of My Heart" to the holiday flick Blizzard.

Even with this whirlwind of activity, Aselin Debison continues to live a normal childhood in Glace Bay with her parents, Donny and Joan, and her younger brother Blake. Now 14, Aselin is hard at work on her sophomore album, which will showcase her development as an artist and a songwriter. She recently signed a deal with Fender, and is using their guitars to create songs with warm, earthy pop flavour.

Promo for Sweet is the Melody

This has a little part of the many of the songs from Sweet is the Melody. A fan made video. Don't let the picture fool you. This is the album she made at 12 years of age.

One of my favorites by her. Once in Every Life

Something more uptempo. This starts as a making in the studio video and then goes into a live performance with orchestra. Moonlight Shadow

Another of my favorites from Sweet is the Melody. To Say Goodbye to You

A little video of artwork someone made for her version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World

Another artwork video set to Aselin singing The Gift

One more uptempo live performance. Getting Dark Again

To show how she developed and changed, here are a couple songs from the album she did when she was 15.
Life

This is the title track from her album Bigger Than Me.

I remember vaguely a conversation we had before and you said this. That is OK that you don't like her the same as me, but can you explain why she is boring for you? The songs are not modern enough? She does pretty music, with a celtic flavor to many, and the songs are what we call middle of the road. Not offensive even to little old grandmothers. Is this why she is boring for you? She does her version of the arrangement by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole of the old songs Somewhere Over the Rainbow and Wonderful World. I love that newer version of songs I have known since I was 3 or 4. She did change her style as a teen and I still love her voice. Oh well, anyone else out that is familiar with her or if you check her out, tell me what you think. I think I will start a thread on her to get some of you started. Look for that.

It's not a problem about modern or rhythm. That's right I prefer punchy dance music than ballads, but I can love nice cool songs with symphonic instruments and so on. But Aselin is just boring, i don't know why. Maybe her voice is not enough cute.
But I don't hate, I like her songs. That's just... she doesn't stay in my memory. Razz

That's all right. I was hoping for more comments. Seems kind of quiet around here just lately. Where is everyone?

I like Aselin very much! She certainly is not boring. Razz She has an interesting way of using her voice, as should be with Irish-style music.

And, her first CD was the Christmas album "Littlest Angel", which is even better in my opinion than "Sweet is the Melody". It had a bit excessive use of Autotune though...

I am glad you like her Moorvis. I have only heard one song from her debut Christmas album. The Littlest Angel. Her voice is amazingly beautiful on that, but I am not so fond of Christmas music and not too excited about the male narrator part and short singing by him. I wish it was just her. I will have to try to find the other songs. She was about 10 then, wasn't she? Since you brought it up, I will post the video of that song. Just a photo of her and the song.

I started this thread quite a long time ago now. Aselin has been out of the public eye for 5 years or longer. Just trying to have a normal life and get a college education and such. I hear she is getting married soon. She will be 21 in June.

No action on this thread, because there hasn´t really been anything new on Youtube for quite some time. Then someone uploaded a favorite of mine from the live concert DVD that she did when she was maybe just barely 13. Such a touching performance. Maybe not her very best vocal of the concert, as she is trying to hold back the emotion and tears, but still very good. Get a little water in my eyes each time I watch this.

This was a bit of a shock for me. I was continuing in my search in my Where Are They Now quest and found a new one from Aselin. She is um, uh, bigger now. She may look much different physically, but her voice is actually almost the same. Aselin is very special to me. I have mentioned before that I started trying to find Girl Singers on the Internet about 2 years before Youtube existed, when I was still living in Belize. Aselin is one of the few I found, along with Maria Isabel who had just won JESC. This was right after being dedicated in watching the American Juniors in 2003, which was the one year they had a kid version of American Idol.

The main reason I am doing this is not to actually show you the music or voice they have now, but to those that may not go back that far, you can check out their kid singing days while you are here. Most of the old videos still exist and you can watch them on this page. If you chose just one to see, see the one just above this. She sings that song for her dad who is in the audience and it is so touching. Her voice shakes a little in a few spots because she is feeling so much emotion and she gets her dad crying.
